Jon Del Arroz Releasing New Ayla Rin Adventures

Well it’s been a while and I’ve been super-excited for this one, I hope you’ll be checking it out but Jon Del Arroz, author of Overmind and The Cosmic Warrior (I’ll link each for the reviews and they do contain spoilers, if memory serves) is releasing a follow-up to Overmind and the novel which picks up where Overmind left off, The Immortal Edge.

It’s Right Here At This Kickstarter Landing Page and it’s called The Hidden Emperor. As far as the synopsis goes, it looks like Ayla Rin may have found a conspiracy to replace the Emperor of The Terran Imperium and she has to make a difficult choice to expose the possible fraud and find the actual Emperor which will put her in a world of conflict.

If you thought this was all, you’d be sorely mistaken. Another novel to follow up will also be released called Into The Black where Ayla Rin takes on the unknown. So far, that’s all we know about the novel and I suspect we really don’t want to know too much because it could spoil the ending of the graphic novel, neither of which have been released yet.

That being said, you can still count on a full review of both of them here and I’ll be providing full coverage of them after giving everyone ample time to read it because there will most likely be spoilers in that one as well.

In addition to the hardcovers and softcovers, if you haven’t read Overmind or The Immortal Edge, you can get caught up with this kickstarter.

While I’ve been critical of comics kickstarters over the past few months, it’s important to note that Jon’s already got the material written, as of the time of this writing, the $5,000 goal has already been crushed to death beneath a figure of $11,553 from 145 backers. Jon has always delivered when promised and I don’t have any reason to believe that this will be an exception. When it comes to kickstarted comics/graphic novels, definitely go with people that you know have proven track records.

This series does feature a great character and while Overmind is riddled with that sort of classic sci-fi aesthetic, it’s themes are very modern and certainly far from dated. The Immortal Edge takes on a more grounded approach and, while each can be read as it’s own story, each of the stories link together to form a much larger story with great continuity. If you’re wondering whether or not I recommend it, I have and I still do.

So take a run over to the Kickstarter and check it out. The good news is that this campaign has 58 days left so there is still plenty of time and on top of that, if you pledge now, two stretch goals have already been met which means you’ll also get the graphic novel Flying Sparks vol. 1 and the novel Justified in digital form. There are so many more to go and a short story that will develop Ayla Rin more will be included in the novel Into The Black so get in, let’s make this one the most successful Kickstarter Campaign that indie comics have ever seen.
